Adam has been teasing me for a few weeks now that he has a big surprise. I had my suspicions, but he wasn’t giving any clues so all I could do was wait.
I am here to tell you it was well worth the wait. He has planned us a Lighthouse Tour on the Oregon coast. We have been talking about this for three years since I love lighthouse, you probably didn’t know that, and he loves driving…oh yeah and Oregon. It’s a perfect match. So off to Medford we go to begin our journey.
I am so excited about this. First of all we are going in the fall. I just love the fall and on the beautiful Oregon coast of which I have never visited…I don’t have the words. I can’t wait. Not to mention the cool lighthouses we will visit. I love lighthouses. I have for about the last 12 years. The symbol of the building calls to me. I can’t really explain it, but J. Winterson seems to say it best, “I have been dreaming about a lighthouse. It is such a potent image; practical, because lives depend on it, and at the same time, utterly romantic, this lonely building on the cusp of land and sea, sending out light into the darkness….” Sadly I have never visited one in my life so needless to say I am looking forward it. Last, but definitely not least, this trip will be great quality time together. It certainly has been a while since we’ve taken a vacation together, try sept 2001, and we are certainly ready for it. If the trip alone wasn’t good enough Adam made me this very cool book to document our trip. It’s contents include a map of all the lighthouse we will visit and a little bit about each on different pages. I think we are going to visit about 12 or 13. He’s so stinking creative. When he gave it to me he said “I hope you like it because I know you like it clean.”(referring to my creative style) Well that is true, but no one does it like him and I certainly wouldn’t wait it any other way. It’s a treasure. I just can’t wait to get on the road and fill it up.
There is still a lot to do before we leave. We were up late last night trying to figure out a few details about where we would end up on each night. Of course there is the search for the best restaurants, one of the things I love about vacations. I’m also trying to get everything together with the girls. Thankfully Lori said she would come stay with them at our house for the week so they are still able to go to school. One of the sad parts about this trip…we are missing the Primary Program. I was so looking forward to it this year since I am finally not in the primary. Plus, Bella is playing her violin with a couple other children. I am so disappointed.
Anyway, if anyone has been to the Oregon coast or Portland or any of the surrounding areas and has any suggestions please share.
You are a lucky girl my friend, that trip is going to be awesome! I love that Adam is such a great artist and that he likes to make things like that book. That’s going to be so cool to fill up while you’re there and such a unique project for the two of you to work on together. I love it! I’m sickened by your awesome photos already as well!
amy, i cant even begin to explain how happy i am that the two of you are doing this! adam gets lots of points in my book for not only planning it but surprising you with it, and the book? are you kidding me? it is awsome! i hope you guys have a blast, and if you need any help from me whatsoever dont hesitate to call! when are you leaving?
I lived in Oregon for three years. The coast is just amazing. Cannon beach is so great and fun (if you get that far up).
Newport has a wonderful lighthouse and a great aquarium. Oh and the sea lion cave, you ride an elevator under to this cave with sea lions.
Portland, love Portland. Nw 23rd street is an amazing place to go, it is like park city with great local merchants. You have to take pictures of the bridges, I love driving into portland on I5 and seeing the city against the beautiful water and night lights.
I have so many wonderful places and memories. Oh the Portland Zoo, the Zoo, it is so amazing. You see everything from three different perspectives and without kids would be even better. I will have to email you, and let me know what else you want to know. Besides it is really really cold so make sure you dress warm, watching the surf come in the fall is the best time of year. But like I said there is no sun, so lots and lots of sweatshirts and coats.
wow amy what a treat! i can’t believe it. i too love lighthouses and have heard they are wonderful around those areas. what an artist adam is! you are lucky and so blessed. i am happy that lori can watch your girls since it will be a great bonding experience. maybe she can record it–with your little recorder that you bloged about a while back! that way at least you can hear it! I just think driving and together with music is one of the best combinations ever!
Have a wonderful time…can’t wait to see how it went!
Wow, how exciting! I just love surprises and when thoughtful husbands come up with surprises, it’s even better. It’s so cool that Adam is so creative- you have a whole library of cool books and unique gifts from him. I am sure the photos you will take are going to be AMAZING. What a great album you will be able to compile.
I feel so bad for you that you won’t see Bella in the Primary Program and camcorders are kinda frowned up on at church, eh? Too bad.
Great that Lori is helping with the kids. Family is great.
Oh, I forgot to ask, have you read Ahab’s Wife? The main character lives in a lighthouse.
Call my mom- she’s from there and goes there every year with her sisters. So excited for you to go on a trip alone–it’s so different as a married couple without kids (and much more romantic!!:)) Can’t wait to hear all about it!
amy that is awesome! how fun for you guys. i know you will have such a great time. can’t wait to see your photos.
Adam is so creative, it’s really amazing. I love the book he made.
The Oregon coast is phenomenal. You will have such a wonderful time! If you go to Portland, you will have to go to Powell’s Books (just thinking about it gives me goosebumps!) and Rose’s, a little diner/cafe that has the most amazing chocolate cake I’ve ever tasted.
